[Aaaaalrighty, network, Walter's got a pretty straightforward question to throw out there.]

Over the weekend I found a...dragon? [It looks dragony. He points the camera at the not-very-ferocious-acting Aerodactyl in question, who is lying on his side in the grass, a Volcarona fluttering above him and two Wurmples inching furiously after each other around and over the dinosaur's resting form.] ...in my PC, the way you find Pokemon whose trainers have returned home. But the trainer listed was "Laguna", and...well, I know he's long gone. I found one from him the same way before winter began, and they recognize each other.

So who's gone now that's had a dragon named "Riley" all this time?

[Beep. Hopefully that was to the point enough that someone will know and respond.]

[Sigh. Give him a second to look this up.]

..."Eye-ro-dahk-"...hold, no. Ah..."Aerodactyl". Rock and Flying types.

[Huh. Didn't look anything like a Gronckle.]

I want one. [All this helping.] Not that one, 'cause it acts weird? But a cool one. It's good that you found a dragon, anyway.

...I know of two that went home over the weekend; I don't know for a fact if either of them trained what you received, though.

[...Oh, hold on.]

You knew Kuwata-kun, though, didn't you?

...Leon?

[Walter looks openly shocked. He knows exactly what that means for Leon, and he doesn't like it.

His eyes narrow sharply, and he looks thunderous for a moment before snapping his mouth shut on whatever he was about to say.]

....tch.

[He deflates as quickly as he'd gotten riled. He'd considered Leon a good friend - knowing that he'd effectively died without his knowledge hurts.]

The two of you were acquainted as well, huh?

[Ishimaru isn't sure what to make of that reaction; he just folds his arms and presses forward.]

Of course we were! He was my classmate back home - I didn't get to know him very well back then, but he was a friend of mine here!

[Oh.]

That's right, he gave you [...] that Pokemon.

[Does that mean Ishimaru knows Leon is dead? ...Hell if he knows. They talked a lot about feelings on the future, not so much about circumstances of the past.]

Is there to be some form of send-off for him? [The vague implication in Walter's somber frown being "of the funerary sort". Very, very vague]

[Oh.]

...I...I don't...

[Just...give him a moment to lock this down, Walter, that's thrown him entirely.]

What do you know about what happened?

I know the manner of his death, and the method. I never inquired as to why.

[...but he'd bet now that Ishimaru knows everything. Whether he considers it his story to tell is another matter entirely.]

He and I talked often, and at length. I'd name him as a good friend.

[Ishimaru just nods a bit at that.]

I was there, when he died.

[...Right - right, moving on. If Leon didn't tell Walter why he died, it's for the best not to dwell on it because he does not want to get into the reason that execution happened in the first place.]

I don't know if we'll have any sort of send-off - we never did that for anyone, even back home, unless something changed after I was brought here.

[Walter just nods, not seeming perturbed at all by that. If you have more important things to deal with, that's just how it is.]

You suppose he wouldn't object if I performed some rite or another? [He has partial knowledge of a few that are worth a shot where friends are concerned.]

I don't think he'd mind - at least, I don't see any reason why he would!

[...]

We're working on a way to bring our friends here; it's possible we'll see him again.

[...well, that gets a raised eyebrow (and a sense of deja vu).]

"We"?

[Because when he's talked about this kind of thing with Cecil, he has to reflexively wonder who has enough insight to be "working on" it...or if Ishimaru is using the phrase a bit loosely.]

...Yes...?

[No, really, what is the problem here.]

It's important that my classmates are brought here - there are many of us here already, but there are still several more that aren't, and we need to fix this as soon as possible.

[...So he's talking out of his ass, then. Or counts the pre-planning stage as "working on it". Or is trying to make Walter feel better. Or something like that.

Still, Walter can't object to the idea, beyond the vague conviction that no actual progress on this plan exists.]

Not a bad goal at all. Is it of your invention?

[...or it's "interrogating members of a criminal organization about it," but he can't exactly say that, now can he.]

The means, or the plan we have for obtaining it?

[Or, y'know, that. ~~shhh~~]

Either. Just a passing curiosity.

The means belong to this world - I know what it is that I'm looking for, it's just a matter of finding it!

[...you know...

...he likes this crazy, fate-punching idea. Even if he's really pessimistic about it. But "I know", that's a pretty strong statement to make - maybe Ishimaru really does have something substantial to go on.

And it's not like Walter can't think of someone who deserves to have come here with him.

So he's quiet for a moment, weighing that.]

...If it ever comes to the point of needing another pair of hands or eyes, to that end - can I offer mine?

[ When Naegi responds, the frown on his face is a gloomy one. ]

Um, it belonged to Kuwata-kun... I found his Houndour in the PC the other day.

Mac? [Last he'd heard, he and Leon were getting along so well, too...]

...Yeah, Ishimaru told me. Thanks for letting me know. [Talk about a web of coincidences. Walter had no idea just how closely connected some of the people he knew were.] You're doing all right?

I'm all right. [ For the most part, at least. ] It's just...not easy to deal with, when one of us go home. But he'll come back here one day, I'm sure of it.

[ He's going to make it happen one way or another. ]

[When Naegi says "go home", Walter's expression folds in on itself in an instant. He nods, then hesitates for a moment, then looks down and fumbles with the Pokegear.

He takes a while to do whatever he's trying to do - lock the conversation, apparently.]

I know in what state he returned. Or didn't return, rather. [He...shrugs.] Is that something you'd rather I not speak of?

...Did he tell you about it?

Aye. We talked at length about things of that sort.

[...oh-] But I never asked how it came to pass, exactly. [And as much as he wants to know, he's not going to ask Naegi, either.]

...It's a long story. [ The kind he'd explain if asked, but he wouldn't exactly be comfortable with it. ]

Lots of awful things happened.

I gathered. [He should be surprised or something. These things he's half-learning should seem out of place and appalling but they just don't for some reason.]

He and I didn't talk overmuch about our respective pasts. There were things we never would have come to understand in that regard. [Mostly "time period" kinds of things, but...well, Walter never even considered talking to Leon about what shooting someone felt like, for example. Even without spoilers involved.] And there were stories that weren't ours to tell, I imagine. [Issachar, for him.] We talked more about the future. How to live in this world, in a sense. We found our situations to have more in common than would be expected.

...Kuwata-senpai, I think. But...someone else probably already said, right?

Ishimaru did. [Walter looks a little more subdued in his reply than he did in his post.] You...must be one of his "classmates" too?

No...I'm from a different class, but the same school. Chiaki Nanami, in western order.

Oh - what order?...Chiaki...? [GOOD ENOUGH? Surnames are strange.

As are schools. Strange and mysterious things.] So...that means you knew him? Or didn't?
