...ya know, a lot of the guys I hung out with back home in junior high school were pretty chill like you. We'd shit talk each other an' just dick around, an' nobody got mad or flipped the fuck out.

Then I went to high school. And then the shit hit the roof. And now I'm thinkin', everyone's really different 'bout what you can an' can't say to'em. Normally I'd say fuck'em, but...these guys are my new friends. An' they've stood by me a lot, an' forgiven the dumb shit I've done. I owe a lot to'em.

I guess...I'm jus' tryin' to be nicer to friends. 'Cause they've been really nice to me, an' I know I don't really deserve'em.

[hhhhholy shit] I know exactly what you're talking about. When I - see, people from villages like I am, I'm told we don't pass the Rite often, so most Samurai are... [he pauses for a moment, trying to think of a way to describe them] ...they're Luxurors, uh, wealthy and kept in the castle, educated, govern the kingdom - I'd hardly ever spoken to one before then, much less spent any time around them. And hell, they're-!

[He kind of throws up his hands, looking exasperated.] Which isn't to say I didn't grow fond of some of them. But, hell, it's the same as what you've said! There's things worth standing up for, there's things worth branding someone an enemy over. And then, there's a lot of things that aren't!

[Walter shakes his head, grinning, chuckling a little. He was serious about that, but there's a bit of absurdity there that you can't help but laugh at.] ...But there's nothing wrong with that, either. It takes concessions to get along with most people.

Yeah, that was somethin' I didn't get till high school. Not tryin' to brag or anythin' but I was real popular at school. Everyone wanted to be my friend so I, uhh, kinda never needed to watch how I said things around people. Most of everyone never complained.

[Leon rubs the back of his neck and frowns.]

...gotta wonder though, how many of them were my friends because they liked me, or jus' because I was famous.
