Because if so, some kid's sauntering up to you with a gleam in his eye and a Houndour at his heels. And if you don't recognize that "when two trainers' eyes meet" kind of look...well, he's gonna ask anyways.]

[Setting: the end of Route 31, by the side of a pond near the Violet City gatehouse. Subject: One Walter, and one Rattata lounging in his lap, both looking a little roughed-up but otherwise content. Additional details: a busy metal clinking and birdlike humming off somewhere in the background.]

Well, I suppose it's worth the try... [No sooner has he started the video, peered into it, and said that than he flips the Gear around to get an image of the water. A green, tough-looking fish is swimming in slow circles by the pond's edge. Walter continues to speak with the video on the Basculin.] I'd like to sell this creature - to whom, I care not, I'd part with it for a lark to have it away from here. [...He sounds like he's really trying to sound casual about this.] Its abilities are..."Tackle", "Water Gun", and "Uproar". They call it a Basculin. I've not battled with it once, so I...I think it's not loyal to me at all...?

[He flips the Gear back around, shrugging.] I don't recall anything else important about it. 'Tis just a fish...thing. ["Fish thing" indeed. Walter leans back a little and opens his mouth like he's going to say something more, but-

-he is very suddenly interrupted by a hellish metal-on-metal noise, like an iron bar shoved against a table saw. He jumps and bites out a "What in the-!", setting the Gear down, and falls into stunned silence as the sound tapers off. After a second of silence, his Rattata appears over the Gear, then vanishes behind it, propping it up with a snicker. Walter is halfway to his feet, gaping dumbfounded at the Skarmory that had been jogging around in the background before. She's standing at the center of a small pile of what look like steel shavings, looking oddly slender for a Skarmory, wiggling her tail and beaming up at her trainer as though to say look what I did!]

...What the...devil did you....

[With a patter of her feet and a cheery VROOM VROOM sound (or...as close as a Skarmory can get to that), she takes off like an ostrich, leaving Walter staring speechless after her. (She feels so light and free...!)The Rattata at the Gear is cackling heartily as his trainer glances between Gertrude's retreating figure and the results of her Autotomize technique with his confusion only growing.

...Oh, damn you and your birds-! HOY, GERTRUDE! [Hell if he knows what it just did, but TIME TO GO RETRIEVE THE STUPID THING. He quickly goes to snatch up the Pokegear, and the first half-second of him quarreling with the cameramon is recorded before he grabs it and switches it off.]

Walter. [He raises his hand for a second in a casual greeting wave.] What's this about asking her, now...?

Nice to meet you. [John mimics the gesture.]

Some psychic types are capable of communicating telepathically! So they can sort of act as translators for Pokémon that can't normally communicate with humans. Not all psychics can do it, mind you, it just depends on the Pokémon in question.

"Telepathically"? [He got the rest.]

I think...I'd mind less if it weren't so cheery about it. [That chuckle continues to creep in at the edge of words, Walter's confusion given way to lazy amusement.] If it were after my throat, it wouldn't seem strange at all. Er - it'd seem strange, but I'd not be flustered. [Glances up. Get what he's saying at all?...or maybe it's just a demons thing.]

[Whoever's coming in next is really gonna be feeling it.

Domri's disappointed to see the attack not do much damage, but he recrosses his arms and remains standing in place.

In the grand tradition of Pokémon, the highly telegraphed move with the long charge time goes off without interruption. Somehow. Fleshripper attempts to dodge, but isn't fast enough to get out of the way completely. The hit injures him and forces him to take a step back, but he obviously didn't take much damage from the attack. He bounces in place a few times, then jumps in the air while breathing out water, which surrounds his body as he falls back down. He lands in a crouch, then springs up, launching himself at Gertrude for the water-coated tackle that is Aqua Jet. Let's see who runs out of egg moves first.]

[Hagakure actually is training his Pokemon for once today. Which is unfortunate for him since he's really not prepared for trainer battles at all.

He has his Elgyem battling a random Pidgey while his Abra and Chingling watch from the sidelines on his shoulders. Hagakure gives words of encouragement as Grey the Elgyem defeats the Pidgey when he notices someone approaching from the corner of his eye. He glances in that direction to see some intimidating-looking guy making a beeline right for him.

Well. He doesn't like this already.

He glances in any direction he can that isn't in this kid's. If he doesn't pay any attention to the problem it'll just go away, right?

[ hi i am naegi and i have no idea what's going on in this post. ]

[Audible phew.] Trouble's one way to put it. [He imagines it gets a lot more troublesome than this, though. Pokemon seem to be about as powerful as your average demon and twice as willful.] Without any kind of pact, it's hard to know what they'll do next.

[No such luck. The kid is waving and calling out, his Houndour mimicking him with a low owf and an exaggerated toss of the head.]

What say you to a quick bout?

[Damnit. Well uh, time to play dumb, he supposes.]

Huh? Are you talkin' to me, dude?

[He doesn't even know what the kid was just trying to say ("a quick bout"? whats' that even supposed to mean) so playing dumb really is the best course of action.]

[why do people keep asking him this] Do I look like I've the faintest?

[There's no bite behind it, though. You're too nice to get hard snark. Walter sighs.]

Hoy, I paid mind to your advice with the egg. The first came out fine, as far as I can tell. [This bird thing is the second so who even knows.]

Who else? There's no others in sight. [He comes to a stop a few yards away, and his Houndour barks excitedly and jumps in front of him, dropping into a playful crouch and spitting a few embers. Playtime! he's barking to the Elgyem, wiggling around on the grass.]

[Hagakure glances around and...well shit, there really is no one else around. That kind of backfired horribly, didn't it?]

Oh, guess you're right... So uh, what did you want me to do again? Something about a bout? Haha, about a bout.

[So funny.

Grey the Elgyem wasn't really paying much attention at first, but the Houndour's embers seem to pique his interest. He floats himself in the dog's direction and sends out a small psybeam in response. It's not big enough to do damage; it just looks cool.]

[...What are you talking about.] I'm looking for a battle! Your Pokemon seems eager, so what say you? [He takes a Pokeball off his belt. Orthrus, feeling nothing at all from the technique (dark type yo), flips himself over and rolls rapidly back and forth in delight, stubby tail wagging hard.]

Yeah. At least with a pact, demons won't do anything without our orders.

[Which he's glad for on many levels.]

But you still need to keep an eye on them. If they cause, say, property damage? Your responsibility.

That's good to hear! [ Naegi looks happy. He didn't really do much besides give advice on basic stuff, but he's glad it was useful anyway. ] ...Uh, is the Skarmory all right?

Oh. A battle! Why didn't you just say that before, dude?

[He glances nervously as his Elgyem, then to the two Pokemon on his shoulders.]

Uh, my Pokemon aren't really that high-leveled though so I dunno how this is gonna go at all...

[He hasn't participated in any real Pokemon battles with trainers yet so he's worried. He has no idea what he has to do for those. It's really different from the games, okay?

Grey in the meantime is quizzically watching Orthrus as the Houndour rolls around on the ground. Wow, this dog is really excitable, isn't he?]

[shrug!] Well, mine neither. [Walter whistles sharply, and Orthrus rolls to his feet in an instant, standing up straight (tail still wagging). He backs up to put some space between himself and Hagakure for a battlefield.] You've not had matches with the natives along the way? [The trainers around Cherrygrove may have been pretty young, but they knew what they were doing and....well, they still paid prize money....]

[uhhhh] She's...yet in one piece.

[....Wait a minute.]

[No she's not-]

-Er. Well, you grasp my meaning, yeah? [there are in fact a lot of pieces lying on the ground here BUT HEY] The bird seems healthy, just odd.

... Would it not be easier to fly as a bird with less of those steel feathers?

[ That's her best guess as to why a bird would do something so out of the ordinary. ]

So you'd think, but she chooses to run everywhere. I can't see the difference there.

... Ah, I suppose that you would be unable to.
