ARE YOU ANYWHERE IN OR IMMEDIATELY AROUND THE CITY? DO YOU HAVE YOUR POKEMON OUT? ARE YOU TRAINING THEM TODAY? ARE THEY EVEN JUST KIND OF USING THEIR POWERS?

Because if so, some kid's sauntering up to you with a gleam in his eye and a Houndour at his heels. And if you don't recognize that "when two trainers' eyes meet" kind of look...well, he's gonna ask anyways.]

[Setting: the end of Route 31, by the side of a pond near the Violet City gatehouse. Subject: One Walter, and one Rattata lounging in his lap, both looking a little roughed-up but otherwise content. Additional details: a busy metal clinking and birdlike humming off somewhere in the background.]

Well, I suppose it's worth the try... [No sooner has he started the video, peered into it, and said that than he flips the Gear around to get an image of the water. A green, tough-looking fish is swimming in slow circles by the pond's edge. Walter continues to speak with the video on the Basculin.] I'd like to sell this creature - to whom, I care not, I'd part with it for a lark to have it away from here. [...He sounds like he's really trying to sound casual about this.] Its abilities are..."Tackle", "Water Gun", and "Uproar". They call it a Basculin. I've not battled with it once, so I...I think it's not loyal to me at all...?

[He flips the Gear back around, shrugging.] I don't recall anything else important about it. 'Tis just a fish...thing. ["Fish thing" indeed. Walter leans back a little and opens his mouth like he's going to say something more, but-

-he is very suddenly interrupted by a hellish metal-on-metal noise, like an iron bar shoved against a table saw. He jumps and bites out a "What in the-!", setting the Gear down, and falls into stunned silence as the sound tapers off. After a second of silence, his Rattata appears over the Gear, then vanishes behind it, propping it up with a snicker. Walter is halfway to his feet, gaping dumbfounded at the Skarmory that had been jogging around in the background before. She's standing at the center of a small pile of what look like steel shavings, looking oddly slender for a Skarmory, wiggling her tail and beaming up at her trainer as though to say look what I did!]

...What the...devil did you....

[With a patter of her feet and a cheery VROOM VROOM sound (or...as close as a Skarmory can get to that), she takes off like an ostrich, leaving Walter staring speechless after her. (She feels so light and free...!)The Rattata at the Gear is cackling heartily as his trainer glances between Gertrude's retreating figure and the results of her Autotomize technique with his confusion only growing.

....]

...Oh, damn you and your birds-! HOY, GERTRUDE! [Hell if he knows what it just did, but TIME TO GO RETRIEVE THE STUPID THING. He quickly goes to snatch up the Pokegear, and the first half-second of him quarreling with the cameramon is recorded before he grabs it and switches it off.]

[Don't mind the Noctowl rolling her eyes. It's not doing anything wrong - but she does spread her wings. Siiiiigh, children.]

[Walter jogs to a halt by Ramza, content to let the bird chase the other bird. The first thing he does is just give him this look.]

[Thanks to that godawful metallic grating sounds, there's a bit of a grimace on John's face. He's fairly sure that was the worst sound he's ever heard n his life and he's absolutely positive that he never wants to hear it again.]

[Fingernails on a blackboard ain't got shit on this noise.]

The hell was that? I've never seen a Pokémon do anything like that before.

[That would be because you only have one steel-type, John.]

Yes, yes, heading out to do so, and not at the moment.

The first one to respond to Walter's appearance is Fleshripper the friendly Croconaw, who sees what are obviously new friends and happily bounces over to give some love bites. The approaching three-foot-tall crocodile with lots of sharp teeth is obviously nothing to be concerned about, am I right?]

[Matter-of-factly - as Hildegard is shrieking out an Echoed Voice, following the fast child.]
'Tis almost as fast as a Red Chocobo.

And you suppose I have?

[He's given up on chasing her, she's gonna have to trot her happy ass back here if she wants to stay on the demon-tamer train.]

'Tis a pile of...did she file all her armor off...?

[INCORRECT. Walter leaps into reflexive action when he sees the Pokemon coming for him, recalling Orthrus (fire is weak to water, that one's easy) and letting out Gertrude the Skarmory to screech and raise her wings like a shield against sharp things.

It takes him a moment to swallow back the urge to just destroy the monster before it has another chance to attack, but thankfully that's something he's had time to work on, and he can call out to the trainer.]

Hoy! Let's have a battle!

[Fast. So very fast. So light and free.]

Did you see what she left behind? [No, seriously, come look at this shit. Look - right there. What the hell is this bird.]

Ramza does come over, and starts to look at it.]
It seems... she discarded her armour? 'Tis dangerous if she did it in battle.
[...Damn none of this looks like it could be used as a sword. Ah well.]

oh my god. See, when you say it like that, it kind of makes sense in a "wow fuck logic" way, but hey that's how magic works.

But it looked so stupid when it happened.

Walter just needs to plop himself down cross-legged and sigh heavily over this pile of WHY. It has been a nutty month. And he'd just started to get used to all the (significantly more dangerous) craziness back home, too.]

[Domri recognizes Walter from their previous conversation and grins when Walter issues his challenge.]

Sure!

[He plants his feet shoulder-width apart and crosses his arms across his chest, trying to look the part of a beastmaster/chieftain standing at the head of his horde/war party.]

You can start it off, Fleshripper.

[Fleshripper happily bounces in place with a series of happy "Naw! Naw! Naw!"s. Domri looks back over to Walter. He'll treat this like a Gruul duel, which means...]

Challenger has the honor of first hit.

[Confidence is not something that Gruul lack. If they do, they won't admit it.

Considering that Domri has been busy training his team since he got here, that hit probably won't be as effective as Walter might hope.]

[And that's when another screech comes out. Seems Hildegard is beginning to fight the speedy baby.

Ramza just looks from the pile, to Walter, back to the pile.]
...Are you okay?
[he cares about you, bro]

[Yeah...yeah, this isn't a fight he's going to be winning.

But the fun is in the fight itself, so:]

As we've done, Gertrude! [She flaps her wings, lifting herself off the ground, and fires Stealth Rocks to encroach on Domri's side of the field.

[Fleshripper dances out of the way of the rocks as they appear in that infuriating way that makes it look like he's mocking his attacker's aim. Domri's Onix knows Stealth Rock, so he knows that the next Pokémon he uses will have to be tough enough to take the hits. For now though, this can be the battle of the egg moves.

Domri uncrosses his arms and points at Gertrude with his right hand while clenching his left hand into a fist at his side.]

Blast down that construct, Fleshripper!

[Fleshripper gives a happy "Naw!" and glows white, creating a see-through afterimage of himself that spins quickly and creates a silver ball with a green core in his mouth that he fires at Gertrude. Domri has no idea why AncientPower is a Rock-type move, but what he does know is that Rock is strong against Flying. He hasn't encountered a Steel-type yet though, so he doesn't realize that Steel/Flying is neutral to Rock. Live and learn.]

[He straightens up, stretches his arms over his head, and flops back onto the grass, chuckling.]

Madness. [Shakes his head a little.] I pray she doesn't think to do that indoors at any time...

[Yeah, okay, Atsuro's torn between being baffled, wincing at that horrible noise or just laughing.]

So...you okay over there?

Well--!

[...]

No, I guess not, I mean you seem pretty confused too. But I mean she's your bird! You stand to know a little bit more about her than I do. I can't say I know a whole lot about Skarmorys, personally. But uh...I mean I guess that noise kind of sounded like metal filing off metal...

[Oh, hey, it's Tokyo dude.] She seems still...whole? [wtffff] Certainly eager to move about.

...Pokemon don't ever just run off and leave their trainers, do they?

Not really? I haven't heard of any Pokemon running away from their trainer's official care, since they're still registered to us. Maybe just run off and give us trouble, at most.

Did your Pokemon just...

[ There's no way to end this sentence without being offensive, so she'll just bite her tongue. ]

[Don't mind Ramza just kneeling. He's not the sort to lay down like that, but...]
Tis... I've not seen abilities like this, either. Not in Ivalice, or here.
[Don't mind how he's fiddling with the grass, the slightest bit. Though, his tone is still rather focused. Ramza isn't the sort to stop being serious, even when relaxing as his Noctowl is probably trying to bite the young Skarmory on the neck.]
There's no predicting Pokemon.

[Uggghh he gives up thinking about this.] Asking how is moot, I'd just like to know why. This bird's mad as they come.

[plops himself down against a rock.] Who're you?

[These simpler battles often leave Walter feeling antsy. He doesn't stand in one place, but paces steadily across his edge of the battlefield, keeping a sharp eye on the action.

Gertrude doesn't need to be told to try to dodge. She flaps once, avoiding a direct hit by jumping up in the air, but the attack catches her on the talons, sending her somersaulting to the ground. Walter looks baffled for a moment at the impressive fumble before barking out another command.]

Spikes, too. Then slash!

[HOPE YOU LIKE ENTRY HAZARDS. The slash in question is an Air Slash, which Gertrude has to take a few seconds to charge her wings with before she can whip them forward to fire the blade of wind - if she gets the chance to.]

[Welcome to Johto, Walter. Thinking logically is moot.]

Maybe she...thinks it's funny? I don't know, Pokémon are weird like that sometimes. If you had a psychic type, you might be able to ask her directly yourself.

Anyway, I'm John Egbert. [He grins.] And yourself?

[no it's fine he's wondering the same thing

In fact, his response is to sort of throw his hand up in the air in a defeated shrug.]

I think she doesn't know she's a bird.
